Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (1892–1972) was an Indian librarian, mathematician, educator and pioneer of Library and Information Science. His pioneering contributions to classification, cataloguing, library education, public library development and documentation established a strong intellectual foundation for modern librarianship in India.

Who Was Dr. S. R. Ranganathan?

Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan was one of the most influential figures in the history of Library Science in India. Although he began his professional career as a mathematics teacher, his appointment as the University Librarian of the University of Madras in 1924 changed the course of his life.

His analytical and mathematical background strongly influenced his approach to classification, cataloguing and knowledge organisation. He developed systems and principles designed around the needs of readers and the efficient organisation and retrieval of information.

He is widely recognised as the Father of Library Science in India.

Worked as an Assistant Lecturer in Government Colleges at Mangalore and Coimbatore, teaching mathematics and physics.

Joined Presidency College, Madras, as Assistant Professor of Mathematics.

Appointed University Librarian of the University of Madras.

Travelled to England to study library practices and visited University College London.
1945–1947
Served as University Librarian and Professor of Library Science at Banaras Hindu University.
